Inlays and onlays in Cork
If a regular filling can’t repair a tooth, an inlay or onlay (sometimes called overlays) can help protect and strengthen teeth from further damage or developing into something more serious.
If a regular filling can’t repair a tooth, an inlay or onlay (sometimes called overlays) can help protect and strengthen teeth from further damage or developing into something more serious.
An inlay sits within the cavity of a tooth, whereas an onlay is fitted over the tooth and can build up any area of tooth damage or fractures. It is often the back teeth that require inlays or onlays, as the surfaces of these ‘chewing’ teeth take more biting force and need a stronger solution.
As your dentist will only remove the decayed or damaged part of the tooth: more of your natural, healthy tooth structure is preserved. Like fillings and crowns, inlays and onlays are usually made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin to blend with the rest of your teeth and provide lasting strength and reinforcement to damaged teeth. Composite resin and porcelain are great choices if you're looking for a discreet option.
Porcelain, gold, or composite resin inlays and onlays are usually placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The procedure involves removing decayed tooth structure or old fillings, preparing the tooth cavity and taking an impression or scan of the cavity so we can create a custom-fit inlay or onlay that is made off-site at a dental laboratory. Typically, two visits are required to complete this kind of treatment.
